Rasaq Okoya's daughter to wed Alao-Akala's son on Easter sunday

Hadiza Okoya, daughter of business mogul Chief Rasaq Okoya will wed her boo, Olamiju Akala, the first son of former Governor of Oyo state, Adebayo Alao Akala on Easter Sunday, April 20th.

 

The Nikkai (Islamic wedding) and court wedding will take place inside the Okoya expansive estate, in Lekki, Lagos. The couple had their introduction on January 12th.

 

Hadiza is the only child of a union between Chief Okoya and his former Liberian wife, while Olamiju on the other hand is the first son of Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala.

Food vendor caught with concealed cocaine in vagina at MMIA

A 36 year old food vendor named Chinelo Okorom Lynette, who sells in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos was recently arrested by NDLEA officials with 685 grammes of cocaine concealed in her vagina.

Chinelo was discovered with the illegal drug tucked in her vagina during the inward screening of passengers that arrived at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport on an Ethiopian flight from Addis Abba.

In her confessional statement, Chinelo said she was lured and deceived to do it

 "I am a food vendor at Ajangbadi, Lagos and have never been involved in crime. I am a victim of man’s cruelty to man. My husband abandoned me with four children two years ago. I work hard to pay their fees and ensure their proper upkeep. The last straw that devastated me was when the landlord forcefully ejected me. I had nowhere to turn to for solace. I was crying like a baby when a man came to console me. I have never met him in my life. He asked me to wipe my tears and promised to introduce me to importation business. I felt he was God sent until he sponsored my trip to Addis Ababa. When I got to Ethiopia, he told me to take cocaine to Nigeria. Initially I disagreed but he threatened to recover his investment at all cost,” She was quoted as saying.

NDLEA chairman Ahmadu Giade confirmed the incident and asked members of the public to be wise and careful about the deceptive ways of drug dealers.

How has life been with you since the death of your husband?
We thank God for His kindness and love for us. We also thank those that have been around us in these moments of grief. We are still waiting for those that have distanced themselves from us to reconcile and come back. We are not angry with anybody. We are still friends to everybody. We look forward to the Almighty Allah to provide us the fortitude to bear this loss. So life has been quiet and peaceful with us. We are one and a happy family. Continue...

When you heard of his sudden death, how did you take it? How did you feel?
My husband’s death was like a coup. It was sudden and shrouded in confusion. General Abdulasalami [Abubakar] just called me, telling me to come and collect the dead body. We buried him like any other ordinary Nigerian. It was quite unfortunate the way he died. Allah knows best and unto Him we shall all return. May his soul rest in peace. I’m yet to fully recover from the shock of his death.

And how did you both meet?
Like any other would-be couple. He was a charming, handsome and likeable personality; a loving father who liked his children and loved ones. We became friends and got married. Here are pictures in the family album; before, during and after our wedding day. He was a caring husband, a dedicated father and an affectionate grandfather.

President Goodluck Jonathan awarded your late husband a centenary award. How did you feel receiving the award?
We felt happy. Maybe this is the beginning of good things to happen to Nigeria; maybe reconciliation… President Jonathan is a young man, he is using his time and energy to bring peace and reconciliation. I think it is high time we all come together to lift the country and stabilise ourselves. I hope it is the beginning of good things to come.

Do you still continue with the pet projects you embarked on when you were first lady?
I did those projects on government basis. They are still on there. Obasanjo did not change the names, neither did subsequent [Presidents]. The African First Ladies Peace Mission is still there, the Poverty Alleviation Programme, the National Programme on Immunisation, the Family Support Programme, the Family Support Basic Education Programme and the Family Economic Advancement Programme are all there. These are projects and programmes that touched the lives of the people, particularly women.

The National Hospital is there and so are the other hospitals around the country. I never did  any programme for my personnal benefit, but for the government and the people of the country. So today, in my personnal capacity, on whether I’m still embarking on these projects, I’m no longer in government so I’m not embarking on such projects. I tried my best as the then first lady to bring about all-round development, particularly for women in the rural areas. We did extensive reach-out to the rural populace and touched lives in the remote areas of the country.

Do you have any political ambition?
No, I don’t have any political ambition.

For the presidency, at least; the first woman President of Nigeria?
Not at all. I was a first lady. I just want peace for the country. Stability and development are not achieved by one person. There are governors, ministers, local chairmen, civil servants and the like. It is a cluster of people. The President alone does not make a government.

What is your assessment of General Muhammadu Buhari, and by extension, the All Progressives Congress, APC?
I brought General Buhari into politics; It’s not that I want to expose him. We did everything to support and encourage him. He called my son Mohammed to join Congress for Progressive Change, CPC. They rejected Mohammed by force during the governorship race. This was the trend, not only in Kano, but also in Katsina, Bauchi and other states. I think it is not healthy for democracy; not just because of Mohammed but for the smooth play of democratic norms and values. Democracy is the choice of the people. But when people put their own personal interest first and they interfere [in the process], then it is no longer democracy. It is unfortunate that elders like them could come belittle themselves in the race.
For the APC I cannot comment. It is not yet time for me to do so. However, it is good for democracy to have competition and opposition. It enhances democratic values, norms and stabilises the country’s image, and will eventually uplift our democratic credentials in the international comity of nations.

Your son, Mohammed, wanted to be governor of Kano State.
It is the people of Kano that wanted my son to be governor. They still want him to be governor. They’ve been calling us to come and intensify his campaign. In fact, they are even campaigning on his behalf. So it is people of Kano that want him as governor because they appreciate his father’s contribution to various fields of  endeavour.
They also appreciate the little projects and programmes I did in Kano and in the country. They say he should come and continue the projects and programmes in Kano.

The late General Sani Abacha contributed to the restoration of democracy in Sierra Leone. Could you comment on the role he played in the process.
I cannot tell you exactly how he played this role as I was not a soldier, I was just a housewife. But he tried his best for Sierra Leone and thank God it was a success and indeed, peace returned to Sierra Leone. The late Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was restored to power. It was indeed a tragedy to hear about  his death recently. He was an African statesman of international repute.
I remember one of his visits [to Nigeria] after he was restored to office; he was so calm, amiable and indeed, supportive of a just pan-African solution to African crises. He was indeed, a true democrat of continental proportion. My late husband honoured him and appreciated him.

What message do you have for the people of Sierra Leone on the death of Kabbah?
I send my sympathy, my condolence and my prayers. May God give them peace, may God give them the fortitude to bear the great loss of the father of democracy in that country. May God give the present president, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the power to emulate what the previous president had done, particularly entrenching stability, peace and democracy in Sierra Leone. I wish President Koroma all the best. He is a young man.

I wish the people of Sierra Leone all the best. I have never been there but I hope to be there in my lifetime. I learnt it is a small and beautiful country with about six million people, with lots of natural resources including diamond and oil. May God Almighty grant the late President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah eternal rest. May Allah also grant my late husband eternal rest. Nigeria and Sierra Leone have a long, historical relationship.

We look forward to building on the strong ties that have cemented us for so long a period. That was why my late husband stood by Sierra Leone in the time of her crisis; to restore democracy, sanity and stability in the country. We couldn’t stand by and watch Sierra Leone fall into anarchy, because the entire West African region would have been affected. So we moved in to bring back normalcy and sanity to the country.
So my wish for Sierra Leoneans is that they maintain peace and stability, especially the peaceful democratic course we’ve seen in past elections. We want this to continue so that other countries will emulate it.

Michael Adebolajo appeals life imprisonment sentence

He took someone's life but doesn't want to spend the rest of his life in prison. Michael Adebolajo, one of the two British men who butchered English soldier, Lee Rugby last year, today launched an appeal against his sentence. Adebolajo was sentenced to life in prison in February 2014 without the possibility of parole, while his accomplice, Michael Adebowale was given life with a minimum term of 45 years.

While handing out the sentence, the judge said Michael was condemned to life imprisonment without any minimum years because he led the attack on the soldier and "had no prospects of rehabilitation".

 

Adebolajo and Adebowale killed the father of one in broad daylight near Woolwich Barracks in south east London on May 22nd 2013.

The girl, Lucy Clode met the star while he signed autographs outside a theatre and took a picture with him. She later posted the picture of herself and the actor on instagram where she tagged him.

Lucy who didn’t honour the invitation, later munched their chats and posted it on Imgur.com to embarrass the actor and deleted them some few mins later, but it had already gone viral.

The actor first denied on Twitter that he chatted with the teen on Instagram but later admitted he did and it was highly embarrassing.

“I’m embarrassed and I guess I’m just a model of how social media is tricky,” he said.

"It's way that people meet each other today, but what I've learned — I guess because I'm new to it. You don't know who's on the other end. You get a feel for them, you don't know who you're talking to. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson", the actor concluded.

Another ritualist house discovered in Abeokuta

Another den was discovered yesterday, April 3rd in Akinremi Estate in the Adigbe area of Obafemi-Owode LGA of Ogun State, Vanguard reports

A pregnant young lady in a bid to set herself free from the ritualist ran out of a duplex in the estate on Wednesday night and informed the estate residents of what was happening in the building. The young lady said she was from Abia state and was sold to the ritualist by her elders sister for N100,000.

 By Thursday morning, youths in the area, mostly students of the Moshood Abiola Polythecnic, invaded the building and engaged in a thorough search of the building and amongst the things they found in the building were charms, ivory plate containing fresh blood, coffin, and effigies.

Also discovered in the building were passports and Identity cards of Senior and Junior Students of Sacred Heart Catholic College, Oke-Ilewo who are believed to have been killed by the ritualist.

Other male and female clothings were found in the building. Three pregnant ladies and three kids were rescued from the building.

Angered by the act, the youths of the area took laws into their hands and burnt the building down with the cars in the building.

The Ogun State Police Deputy PRO officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, while confirming the incident said the police has arrested two suspects, one Muibat Yusuf and her brother, who are indigenes of Kwara State.

A man-eating crocodile suspected of killing at least six people has been captured off the shores of Lake Victoria in Uganda.

The enormous beast, over 18ft long and weighing approximately a tonne, was caught after worried locals demanded wildlife officials hunt it down.

Its latest victim is believed to be father-of-two Bosco Nyansi, a local fisherman whose tattered clothing was discovered floating on the water.

No other trace of Mr Nyansi has been found and friends say he was mauled by the beast.

The animal, believed to be over 80-years-old, is thought to have seriously injured several other fishermen after developing a taste for human flesh.

Game wardens trapped it using a large chunk of meat on a hook following a four-day search. They trapped it in a corner before binding it up with rope.

Hundreds of people from nearby Kakira village gathered to watch as it was bundled onto the back of truck. It will now be transferred to the Murchison Falls national park.

It is one of the largest crocodiles in captivity weighing only 47kg less than the current record holder  - a 21ft saltwater crocodile captured in the Philippines.

Crocodiles are the third-most dangerous predator in Africa after the hippopotamus and the lion. They are thought to be responsible for 275 to 745 attacks on people a year, most of them fatal.

Crocodiles have been around for more than 200 million years. The average lifespan is about 45 years, but can be much longer.

It's not unusual for African crocodiles to kill huge prey such as young hippopotamuses, giraffes, lions and buffalo.

They burst out of the water seizing their prey with their powerful jaws before dragging them underwater until they drown.

Delegate demands public execution of corrupt Nigerians

Nigerian governors and other political office holders in Nigeria have been blamed for the poverty, insecurity and unemployment in the country.

Several delegates, who made contributions on the floor of the National Conference Thursday, blamed the country’s woes on its past leaders including some of those who were seated in the hall.

A delegate, Musa Shehu, a transporter, mocked some delegates, who he said stole so much money from the government with which they set up transport companies after they retired.

Instead of investing their loot to benefit Nigerians, he said, Nigerian governors and other political office holder build hotels and palatial homes in Dubai. He called on Nigerians to put pressure on those who loot the nation’s economy and invest abroad to repatriate their loots to the country.

Mr. Shehu boasted that he had never stolen from anybody in the course of building his vast business empire. He said instead, he had created more jobs for Nigerian youths than those who steal public funds. He called for the establishment of a Bank of Transport to strengthen the nation’s transport sector and provide jobs for young people.

On a controversial note, he called for the execution of parents who write examination for their children, civil servants who declare false ages to remain in service, and public office holders who steal public funds, just like the case in China.

Mr. Shehu said, “Mr. Chairman, we must begin to execute parents who write examination for their children. We must execute governors and political office holders who steal public money. We must execute civil servant who over-declare their ages and remain in service beyond 60 years, thereby preventing young people from getting job opportunities just like what is happening in China.”

He also blamed the youth for going to universities and other tertiary institutions to become cultists and end up leaving the schools without character and skills. He said he had met graduates who could not write common names of people.

Kashim Ibrahim from Borno State blamed the growing insecurity in the country on failure of leadership and monumental corruption.

Mr. Ibrahim noted that over 30,000 people have lost their lives due to insurgency in the North-East while over 3 million have been displaced from their homes.

According to him, the insurgents are youths between the ages of 14 and 19 years who are largely illiterate, poor and devoid of skills.

He said, “We have to create reconstruction fund of N300 billion for the rebuilding of the affected areas.”
A delegate from Cross River State, Florence Ita-Giwa, argued that the Conference belonged to Nigerians and called for the re-launch of Nigeria. Like other delegates, she blamed the woes of Nigeria on its leaders including, those at the Conference.

She said, “Mr. Chairman, we are almost running a one party state, where the opposition party is behaving as if it’s fighting warfare.”

She accused some opposition political parties of frustrating moves to re-invent the country and urged Nigerians to rally around President Goodluck Jonathan to change Nigeria for the good of the citizenry. On the representation of women in the Conference, Ms. Ita-Giwa said sarcastically, “We see elder statesmen with their walking sticks, where are the women with their walking sticks.”

U. M Ivowi, a professor representing the Nigerian Academy of Education, said education had the solution to the nation’s problems.  He said most of those who were prominent in the country today, benefited from government scholarships but would not allow young people of today to enjoy such privileges.

He said, “After they become something, they now train their children and abandon the children of the poor.”

He said 10 million Nigerian children were out of school and called on government to change all the Almajiri schools back to normal schools. He noted that no child of the elite goes to the tailor-made Almajiri schools.

“We have many children in the North who are not in school. In civilised societies, children are the property of the state. It is wrong for parents to keep their children from away schools. We are postponing the evil day when we do not take care of our children today,” he said.

Nigeria's recalculated economy is worth $510 billion, by far the biggest in Africa, officials announced Sunday using long overdue revised data that gives the West African nation continental bragging rights but does little for the 70 percent of its citizens living in poverty.

The new value of Nigeria's GDP adds previously uncounted industries like telecommunications, information technology, music, airlines, burgeoning online retail outlets and Nollywood film production that didn't exist when the last GDP count was made in 1990. Then, there were 300,000 landlines. Today, Nigeria has 100 million cell phone users.

The new figures also will take account of growth in agriculture and tourism that have flourished since democracy was restored in 1999, ending decades of military dictatorship.

With one fell swoop, Nigeria knocked out of the ring South Africa, whose GDP of $353 billion was previously counted the biggest on the continent and which is the only African member of the G20.

"Nigeria's success is a reminder that Africa is moving ahead despite its current challenges," said investment manager Kevin Daly of UK-based Aberdeen Asset Management, which invests in Africa. He pointed out that it is a Nigerian, billionaire Aliko Dangote, who is building Africa's largest privately owned oil refinery.

Investors' attention will be drawn by the fact that while oil remains the biggest source of government revenue, about 80 percent, oil production is declining while Nigeria's agriculture, communications and service sectors are enjoying healthy growth.

Nigeria has been Africa's biggest drawer of direct foreign investment despite myriad woes, from massive corruption and oil thefts costing the country some $20 million a day to an Islamic uprising in the northeast that has killed more than 1,200 people so far this year, to a paralytic electricity supply that keeps businesses dependent on diesel-run generators.

Finance Minister Ngozi Ikonjo-Iweala told a news conference Sunday that the new data makes Nigeria the 26th largest economy in the world and raises its per capita income to $2,688, making it No. 121 in the world, up from No. 135.

That is still feeble compared to South Africa's $7,336 for its population of 48 million. South Africa, bedeviled by mining strikes, violent protests over services and a lackluster performance that has kept annual growth at around 3.5 percent, still has infrastructure unrivaled on the continent, most notably a power sector that generates 10 times more electricity than Nigeria.

Nigeria's revised figures will lower its much-vaunted growth rate of 7 percent but also will decrease an already low debt to GDP ratio of 21 percent, which should lower interest rates should the government want to borrow more, economists said.

Ikonjo-Iweala blamed decades of military rule for the delay in repositioning Nigeria's economy, but the country is not alone. Ghana's economy jumped by 60 percent when it recalculated its goods and services production in 2012, and Kenya and Zambia are considering the same.

Ikonjo-Iweala has said that Nigeria's economy needs to grow at about 10 percent to address massive poverty and youth unemployment. Government statistics say unemployment increased from 12.7 percent in 2007 to 23.9 percent in 2011; the World Bank says unemployment among young Nigerians stands at 38 percent but analysts say it is as high as 80 percent in many parts of the country.

Financial analyst Bismarck Rewane called the revisions "a vanity. The Nigerian population is not better off tomorrow because of that announcement. It doesn't put more money in the bank, more food in their stomach. It changes nothing."

Nigerians took to social networks to share their feelings. "So Nigeria has now supplanted South Africa as Africa's largest economy. But I've not had light (electricity) for seven days, so it means nothing to me," said one tweet.

Another commented: "Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy - on paper. So technically, I'm rich in theory."
